本剧以田中光著作《明治的南丁格尔大关和物语》为原案，取材自日本首位专业女护士大关和与铃木雅的真实经历，描绘了她们推动护士注册制度、设立派出看护妇会协助防疫的历程。明治18年，日本首个护士培训学校成立。坎坷命运下早成单亲母亲的一之濑凛（见上爱饰），与自幼被遗弃、在教会庇护下长大的大家直美（上坂树里饰），在这里命运般相遇。她们与同学们一同接受尚在摸索中的护理教育，思索“护理是什么”“面对病人意味着什么”。毕业后，凛和直美各自经历被逐出岗位、卷入事件等波折，却在霍乱与痢疾肆虐之时再次携手，直面瘟疫。

　　以92岁高龄于2006年逝世的日本女性时装设计师小筱绫子（同时也是著名设计师小筱弘子、小筱顺子、小筱美智子三姊妹的母亲）为原型，讲述主人公小原糸子（尾野真千子饰）身为母亲和服装设计师，一生充满泪水与欢笑的人生奋斗故事。
　　由NHK大阪放送局制作，也是五年来首部以大阪府作为舞台的晨间剧。大阪局于2011年1月13日召开记者招待会说明制作概要，2011年3月7日正式宣布起用尾野真千子为女主角。[1]
　　原本计划2011年9月26日开始播出，但由于东日本大地震的发生，前两档《铁板》与《太阳公公》的播放时间都顺延一周，因此《康乃馨》延至10月3日才首播，总集数比原计划缩减一周（6集）。
　　本剧为首部完全采用非交错扫描式（Progressive）摄影机拍摄的晨间小说连续剧，在此之前NHK已有白洲次郎、坂上之云等特别剧以及2010年以后的大河剧（如“龙马传”、“江～公主们的战国～”等）采用。
　　另外，本剧各周的副标题皆是以花语来命名，例如第一周的“あこがれ”（向往）即为向日葵的花语。
